m-audio 7.1 - quiet, and distorted in 6-STABLE

I -finally- can use my m-audio card after having it for 2.5 years.
However, it sounds distorted, and isn't very loud.  I have read that
there was a similar problem with the 5.1 card that was fixed via
initilization.

Can I help anyone debug this card, or are there any more hints for
setting it up?
